Each week, I'll be breaking down what we're doing at each rehearsal.
It is your responsibility to know if you are in the pages being rehearsed each day. Please don't ask me or Morgan if you are needed. That'll be your job once you receive scripts.
Here's our first week plans:
September 30th:
ALL CAST is required to be at rehearsal. We'll be meeting in MC-8.
When you arrive, you see a white board with your names on it and some dates. Initial or mark under "9/30" that you are here. This is your sign in board for the show and the first thing I'll look at to see if the entire cast is present. You must make it job #1 each day to sign in. Do nothing else, until you have done this simple task. DO NOT have someone sign in for you. This is your job, and your job only.
We'll set up a couple of tables squished together to make one big table for the entire cast to sit at. Grab a script, calendar and a copy of the actors' contract. We'll do introductions first, then go over the contract and the calendar. When we're done with that, we'll dive into the script by reading the entire thing out loud.
October 1st:
ALL CAST is required to be at rehearsal. We'll be meeting in MC-8 again. Sign in!
Normally, we dive right into blocking the play. Blocking is just us figuring out where you'll be standing, sitting, walking, entering and exiting on stage. For this rehearsal, I want us to explore the original movie. Based on years of experience, I can't seem to trust cast members to watch something on their own, so I want to watch "A Christmas Story" as a group. This is so it'll be fresh in our heads and so we can see what we'll be recreating for the stage. I don't want to do another show based on a movie where I have cast members telling me that they have never seen the movie, don't have time to watch the movie or don't care to see the movie. How can you play a character from a movie, if you've never seen it?
Afterwards, we'll talk about the movie and what we want to bring to our production. You don't have to take notes, but you may want to do so.
October 2nd:
We're blocking pages 9-30. If your character is not on those pages, you are not required to be here.
Sign in and be sure that you have your scripts and a pencil handy. We're going to go through the first 21 pages and you'll be marking where you will be required to be on stage during those scenes with that pencil. Some short hand can come in handy. Here's some Drama Shorthand for you:
SR: Stage Right . SL: Stage Left . CS: Center Stage . USR: Upstage Right . USL: Upstage Left . DSR: Downstage Right . DSL: Downstage Left . CR: Center Right . CL: Center Left . X=Cross (or move)
So if you were to write in your script: XDSR that would mean "Cross or Walk Downstage Right" .
No clue about what is left, right, up or down? I'll show you!
October 3rd:
We're blocking pages 30-43
Sign in and get ready for more fun! We'll also be taking a trip under the MP stadium to retrieve the coolest prop we've ever had here at MP, a life size car made of wood, cardboard, plastic, real car parts and duct tape. We'll probably need the entire cast to push it from there to the stage.
If you have any questions about the schedule or the calendar in general, be sure to let me or Morgan know!
