I thought this should be addressed before it becomes a bigger problem for us:
Water Bottles:
Yep, we have rules for these. Please do your part to follow them and we'll all get along well and stay healthy!
1) You can have water bottles.
2) Water bottles (from now on) need to stay in MC-8. I've been noticing that some cast members are tossing empty bottles or leaving partially used water bottles in various areas backstage. Some were actually tossed onto the back floors and some were tossed by the band doors. Some are being left on set pieces. I know you can get thirsty and need that drink after a big dance number or song, but we can't have this happening. If water spills, not only is it slippery on the cement, but it can be a real challenge to mop up in the dark. Sometime water bottles that are tossed on floors get caught in the wheels of set pieces or kicked over in the dark. One time, a water bottle that was left on a set piece became part of a scene because no one noticed it was left on a set platform. I picked one up after rehearsal last night on the castle steps! It's not that we want to leave you parched, it's just that so much can go wrong with them backstage and onstage.
3) Exception to rule 2 is stage crew. They can have water bottles, but they can only keep them in one place and one place only backstage.
4) All waster bottles should have your name on it (if it's a plastic store bought bottle and not a flask). You may think that's your bottle on the platform...but is it? Sharpies are in the bottom left drawer of my desk. Use them and put them back.
5) Do not share water bottles. This is the other reason we have rule 4. You want to make the entire cast sick before opening night? No? Then don't share your diseases...or water bottles. Yes, it's happened before. All of these rules are based on things that have happened before...
6) At the end of rehearsal or each show, if you have a water bottle YOU are responsible for recycling it, tossing it away or taking it with you. Yesterday, Ashlyn and I and others picked up so many water bottles after a lot of you left. I've only had to ban water bottles once before when this was an ongoing problem. Can you do a 3-hour show in heavy costumes without drinking water at least once? Probably not.
If you see anyone violating the rules, just kindly remind them. If we see "no name" water bottles, they may get tossed for your safety, so just know that.
Scripts:
Okay. It's been a month since we've been "off book" and we're still having some line issues. I get that. We still have 2 weeks to get things down, but I'd rather you worry about creating your character and then "what and when am I supposed to say...." That being said, we're finding scripts being left around after rehearsal and normally it's not a huge deal...but the people who are leaving their scripts are the ones who seem to be having the most line troubles.
Take those scripts home this weekend and work on your lines. Remember when I said Disney and MTI send out "spies" to their productions? It's more of a Disney thing, but Disney is a company that has a certain reputation they would like to uphold. They strictly forbid straying from the script and staging ideas that they've established for their shows. That's why you'll never see a Steampunk version of "The Little Mermaid" or a bloody gore version of "Mary Poppins" or an all white version of "The Lion King." One of the things mentioned in the contract that I signed was "presenting the show as written." That means NO paraphrasing or changing of any lines without written permission from Disney or the authors. I have not asked for any written permission for anything, so that means that you need to say your lines as they are written in the script. A couple of you are paraphrasing a bit and that could get us into a little trouble if our show is observed.
So Joe and Morgan. Pick up those scripts today and study those lines this weekend! The only person that I'm allowing flexibility on this issue is Collin, for obvious reasons.
This has been a public service message for all of you. Thank you!
