Rehearsal notes:
Please read these and respond that you read them. To actually make sure that you read them, I’ve embedded a hidden question that you need to respond to. When responding, do not type out the question…just answer it.
You need to respond to these by noon the next day (Wednesday). Failure to respond will not punish you…it’ll punish the entire cast and crew because we will have to stay even later on Wednesday so I can read these to you.
This afternoon was actually surprising to me. It's really rare for a rehearsal to actually go backwards in accomplishments. I'm hoping that this was just a "long break" syndrome, but it was pretty obvious today that some of you haven't put one thought into the show since last Wednesday. That was honestly disappointing.
Okay. Here's where we need help:
At the beginning of the show…please don’t talk over your microphones. Keep them off when the audience is here…and don’t turn them on until you enter the stage. We don’t want to hear anything backstage…ever.
Ron: stay in character. You came out laughing. This was a horrible way to start the show. As soon as you come on stage...you are in character. If you just heard the funniest joke before going onstage, you can't show it.
Dumbledore: stay in character. You also weren't very Dumbledore. Put your mustache on.
Harry…you have a costume? The Lucky shirt doesn’t work. The bottom ½ is okay though.
We need even more fog. Fog it up!
All students going on the Hogwarts express needs luggage. You’re going away for a whole year. Pick your favorite piece or two. Come out with it in the first scene. Carry it until the end of the train scene.
Scene change to the train scene. Should be much faster. Do we know what the hold up was for? This show is designed like the actual play which moves along pretty fast. I'm not sure what we were waiting for.
(A side note: This was interesting when I saw the Broadway show on Sunday, the students actually used their luggage as chairs on the train. They sat on the luggage. An idea?
Sound fx- These are for Ivanna who should be reading these… The train sound effects need to be repeated because they are not long enough for the scene.
Sorting Hat- Your microphone wire needs to be tucked under your cape. For everyone else…make sure your wires are not hanging off of you. It’s so easy for them to get caught on something and if they get caught on something…they will break. We just spend 380 bucks on just 4 new mics. I don’t want to buy anymore this year or next year either. If your mic wire has a chance that it could get caught on something. It will. It's inevitable.
Albus and Scorpius, it's okay to put your robes on, on stage. It can be done as soon as you are finally sorted into your house. You get a tie and a robe! Yay!
We need to get Lily a costume and a program biography (today would be best!) I want to finish the program and this is a hole. The other hole is a list of stage and tech crew.
Harry: Missed entrance Year 4. Ouch.
Since this is another train station scene, we need luggage again for the studnets.
I could hear laughter from backstage. Remember if you’re backstage don’t talk. If you’re in the hallway don't talk. If your in my room…talk in quieter voices…and don’t burst out in loud laughter.
Harry-Guitar line dropped.
Harry- Mr Amos Diggory- You use his first name the first time you say it.
Where are all of the accents? I hear Amos has one, but the rest of you…not so much.
Scorpius…needs blonde hair. Son of Draco. We may have one, let me look.
Albus- The bathroom is on the other side…
The lip sync scene was great! Nice job being more expressive! It helped to identify who was talking.
Lights: The bookcase scene was too dark…but you fixed it.
Hermione needs to be more exaggerated when she’s being attacked by the bookcase. I’m not sensing panic. It actually is confusing as to what you’re doing.
The bookcase scene was going well…and then after we lose Ron…it drags weirdly.
Good solution to the time turner/book question.
Lights: After “Finally” on page 39, there’s a black out…but not a long blackout. It’s just enough to get the bookcase off.
Sound: Page 42 Tardis sound (it didn’t happen)
The dino v Cedric battle was great!
We could hear someone talking about taking a selfie during the next scene. Be sure to have your mics off backstage! Oh..Michael.
Harry- Hold onto your wand.
Harry- Page 54 You didn’t call yourself the “Boy Who Lived”
Albus. You can be obvious about changing your tie to Gryffondor. It’s a parody. If you can even just pull it out of a pocket and put in on over the other tie...do it.
Hermione’s class. Nice job being there! 1st time!
Hermione- You can move your arms more…You holding onto your wand like it’s going to fly away from you. You do this in many scenes actually. You hold onto your wand like someone is going to steal it.
Scorpius : page 61- “Let’s humiliate Cedric… “ line was all over the place.
Ludo : Fashizom not Face-ism
Harry: Don’t “throw away” Neville Longbottom’s name. It’s a HUGE deal in the Harry Potter universe. When I saw the actual play on Sunday, at the mention that he killed Neville Longbottom, the entire audience gasped. Even say it slower.
If I heard right, you want to do a rehearsal Monday night (5:30 call) (7:00 show) to do a run as if it were real. If EVERYONE can commit to that, that would be fine. There’s nothing great on tv on Monday anyway. If someone can’t make it though, it may not be worth it as much. So for your question: Can you come to M-P on Monday night to do a last minute rehearsal? Respond to this thread with your usual “I read this” and an answer to that question. We can see if we need one on Tuesday before the show too, but we'll see that after we see how we feel on Monday. We would need most stage and tech crew to commit too.
Ron- Late entrance when Snape says there may be two people who can help. We saw Hermione, but that’s not the person who had the next line.
Ron: Late line “Not If we go quickly”
Kung Fu- Fight- Looked great- Let’s add fog. Shame about the red eyes though. Those looked cool and would've really added to your characters.
Cedric- Remember that you need to be out after the Dementors V Snape scene.
Cedric/Harry- Suck my what? Make sure that mic is off. If you had done that on a show night...I would've probably been legally required to kill you.
Scorpius: p 79 you guys understand that because Cedric kills Neville… can’t forget that line, otherwise Ron’s line makes little sense.
Hemione P 81- Check that last line on this page. You paraphrased it.
Albus and Scorpius- you’ll need you fake wands for the scene where you are tied up.
Delphi will literally break your wands onstage. I’d rather them be the fake wands.
Nice death Craig. It’s funny because that’s literally how it’s done in the actual play.
Delphi- Mic on after the scene when you took the time turner off.
Harry- p 102 “It seems like she’s strangely obsessed with…” line
Scorpius- Do you want a hand mirror for the makeover reveal? We have one you can use. I’ll put it on the prop cart and you can figure out how to get it into your hands.
Dephi and Harry- You’ll have to figure out how to get the fire wands into your hands before you need them.
Delphi- Do you have the D&D die?
Harry- You can put your glasses on once you’ve been exposed as Harry again.
We need to make sure Harry has his scar too! (Thursday for sure!)
The final scenes, from Harry and Albus and Delphi playing D & D to the end are actually pretty good. We need to get the rest of the show to this level.
Some people left before rehearsal was done. Remember you need to stay until we tell you we are done. You could miss some important info.
We're missing a microphone! Who didn't put theirs back? That's like the 1st thing we want you to do after the show.
Remember all of the discussion after the show. With 2 scheduled rehearsals, and possibly 2 unofficial rehearsals…we don’t have a lot of time to make this perfect.
This is my 29th show here at M-P and I’ve never had one that was universally hated because of the work of the cast. This is Harry Potter and it’s hard to screw up Harry Potter because he’s so well liked. Let’s not be the Drama Club known to have messed up Harry Potter. You’re going to have people here who know the movies, books and the new play pretty well and will be expecting a lot. You’ll also have “newbies” to Harry Potter who were dragged here by someone. We can work this show to death, but it’s only going to be as good as our weakest cast member. Work on any problems that you’re still having tonight. We’re making progress! Heck, we had Hermione’s class show up as a group for the first time ever! That’s progress!
Come tomorrow with one goal. Do your best, give 100% (or more) and take all of the critiques and learn from them. I’ll be up by the light booth to help them out, and Thursday I’ll be probably near the sound board to help out if needed. Some of the issues we had today were tech related and I want to get them right. I shouldn’t have to worry as much about your part of the show. As mentioned, you’ve had six weeks to get this down. Technically, my directing you should be about done.
I probably won’t be stopping the show at all on Wednesday, but I will still be taking notes. I'd like to start at 3 again with the goal of finishing as close to 4:30 as possible. We're apparently losing Anthony again, and I want to at least be done with his scenes. This is a 90-minute play and I'd like to get it to that point.
Remember don’t be that person who doesn’t read the notes. You have until noon Wednesday to respond. No later.
Okay. That’s all for now. See you tomorrow!
