April 17 Notes
Okay, you promised to read these. I’m giving you until 2:15 tomorrow to prove that you did. If I get 100% response, I will never read you notes ever again after a rehearsal. Promise.
Overall, we’re in good shape with just a week before our first official audience. I’ve done some shows where after the cast leaves, I ball up in a corner and cry, but I’m not feeling that on this show. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication!
Here we go: (Look for the secret message inside that tells you what I want you to do for your response.)
Man in Chair – You’re first because you have the first lines, of course. When the lights come up, give yourself a second or two to react to the light (kind of like you didn’t expect them to come up…because you don’t. )
Man in Chair-I paid a lot of money for that prop record and by gosh, you’re going to show it. Show the audience that the cover really does mention “a gay wedding.”
Man in Chair- Once you start the music, for some reason you start speeding up the pace of your speech. Take it slow. Note how much time you have to talk. I turned the volume down on the record which did help to hear your speech. Just pace yourself more. Set the mood for the audience.
Man in Chair- When the orchestra takes over and it’s almost the end of the song, let the finale finish building up before you say “The curtain is going up. I can’t wait.” (you paraphrased that, by the way.) We can’t hear you when you’re talking over that build up.
Sound (and actors) Tottendale and Underling were quiet at the beginning of the show. Remember to project, and that solves ½ the problem.
George- Once you get your costume, we need to start seeing those strings on your fingers. There is a spool of string (and scissors) on the prop cart. You’ll want to get someone to help you with that.
“Fancy Dress” is such a great start to the show. Your energy is really great on it.
Feldzieg- One thing that we’ll work on tomorrow is the art of cheating out. You are so closed on stage, and I noticed from sitting stage left that I saw your back a lot and you were covering characters with your “body wall.” You have this habit of standing perpendicular to the front of the stage. The 1st scene with the gangsters was the worst.
Lights and stage crew- This is more for lights, but we NEVER want to catch stage crew in the light. They came up too early before “Cold Feets” I’ll try to get up there when I get a chance to help with cues. Kudos though for Kaeli for doing it by herself…again. If you know of a reliable person who can help, I would love to add them. I’ve got more lighting things to add, but I don’t want to do it with only one light person.
“Cold Feets” we do have to move the mirror. It completely blocks the stage left audience side. I hardly saw much of the dance because it took place behind the mirror. Let’s attempt to move it the left side of the couch and see how we can make it work. It’ll mean changing some dance moves to adjust, but I think we can make it work. I have an idea.
“Cold Feets” I’m so impressed with both of you guys. You don’t come across as people who just learned how to do this a month or two ago. Nice job!
“Show Off”
Gangster 1- How do you like them apples? 1) Pay attention 2) If you get hit by an apple, don’t laugh or God forbid get Gangster 2 laughing. Stay in character.
Kitty- You did a better job with the snake yesterday. You’re holding it okay, but you need to push the snake out towards Janet, have it turn it’s head toward you, react and then run off stage. You’re going to fast and missing the reason for screaming and running off stage.
Janet- Keep drinking even if your voice comes in late. Antonio is still working on the timing, but if you hear yourself, keep that cup to your lips. It looked really good until you stopped…and then kept singing. It’s a timing thing. We’ll get it.
Janet- It looked better being further up the stairs in the pit. Yesterday, I could barely see you. We just need to make sure the light booth can find you.
Stage crew- I’m not sure if these get read by them, but perhaps you can share it. The umbrella “stand” was not pushed back behind the desk after the umbrella was removed. It was out in front of the desk awkwardly until it became a real problem at the end of Act 2 when Trix, set her chair down to stand on it, and her chair got stuck in the stand. That could’ve been dangerous. Let’s not forget that again. If any of you see it out after “Show Off” take a second and push it back behind the leg.
Stage Crew- Adolpho’s entrance. I could see stage crew in the fridge.
Lights- Up again to early. We caught a poor stage crew member with the water cart.
Stage Crew-Set change to Bridal Suite- It cannot be set up during the man’s monologue as he’s trying to mop the water off the stage. The mirror was right in the middle of where he needs to mop. There is music (however brief) for the scene change. Wait for it.
Man in Chair- Really nice job taking your time with your monologues later in the show. You have no reason to rush and the humor comes across much better.
“Stumble Along” – Great job Ashlyn- That’s a number!
“Stumble Playoff” – Man in Chair-This was a note from yesterday- Don’t try to challenge the pit when they start up because you will lose every time. You can’t start the monologue at the same time they start playing. I couldn’t hear a word said.
Drowsy- Adolphace again. Be MORE dramatic with your “Take me Adolphace!” – You are king of throwing away that line. Make it bigger!
Adolpho- You were a little off with “Adolpho” today. When you get off, Kesler starts singing to get you back on track. If you hear another voice singing your words, that’s him.
Adolpho- This was a great suggestion from Kesler that he may have given you. You have a great character that you’ve developed and you can work on taking it to the next level. Thing about stretching out your vowels for comic effect. I can show you how tomorrow if that makes no sense to you.
Man in Chair- Look at page 41 in your script. We had a chance to redo it today, but note that there is a change in music between one paragraph and the next. The end of your 2nd paragraph should be at the 7th measure which helps to cue Robert to enter and sing “Accident…”
Cast- Make sure you respond that you read this and also add to your response, a compliment to another cast member in the show. There are 16 cast members, so everyone should get a compliment. If someone has been complimented, you can’t compliment them again! One compliment per cast member!
Janet- Your French is going German again. It’s not supposed to be a great French accent, but it should at least resemble French.
Janet- Line “And then you said.”
Robert – Line “And then I said.” Make sure those lines are right because they cue the song.
So, so, so glad that Robert has skate skills. Nice job!
After “Accident” I love that Robert follows Janet by skating off in the wrong direction. Nice!
Feldzieg- Give Kitty a little more “concentration time” before you say “6” You stepped on her moment.
Gangsters- How long can you hold “Toleeeeeeeedddddoooooooooooooooooooooooooo”? I liked that. It’s the little things where the audience is going to have more fun with the show if you are having fun with it.
Act 2 stuff-
This isn’t too much because you guys are getting to be masters of the 2nd act. Nice job!
Man in Chair- Note that you say “No touch records” twice. You did catch yourself when you mentioned Beautrice Stockwell as “Drowsy Chaperon” instead of “American Lady”
Man in Chair- I think of the sake of choreography, we’ll keep you with a bottle (instead of glass) so you don’t spill anything. It’s a lot easier to handle a bottle.
Robert entrance “There you are!” – We need to fix the staging of this because someone Robert is having to shoehorn himself in due to crowding and it makes his conversation with Janet a little awkward.
Man in Chair- No one will know that you messed up your monologue (except me and Santa) unless you point it out to the audience by saying “I can’t do this for some reason.”
Stage Crew (and clouds) Plane coming out was awkward, but I think the umbrella stand was part of the issue today. Remember you can’t pull on it by the bars because they are only attached to Styrofoam. They will break off (as they did) if you use them to pull the plan out. The main moving out should be done by the “table” part in the center. That’s really the only stable part of the thing. Even putting the lightweight clouds on the wings, bent the wings a little. What happened to stage crew pulling it out? We shouldn’t have cast on this. You’ve got enough to do. This is stage crew’s thing. Literally, the reason we need a stage crew.
-Ashlyn the clouds look nice. We only lost 1 cotton ball.
Lights- Trix needs a spotlight.
The end of the show. You just finished the finale and the lights should go off. What do you do next? YOU DON’T STAY ON STAGE. GET OFF! We’ll do bows on Friday night, but for goodness sake, get out of there as fast as you can! We need to get all of you off stage and a plane before we start bows. Stage crew can wait until the lights go off to remove the plane. Never do that in the light.
See. Act 2. Not so shabby. Well done!
For Wednesday- Same time, but tomorrow (and Thursday) we won’t have the pit. This will be our last chance to fix anything that needs to be fixed before they join us permanently on Friday.
So we’re going to run the show tomorrow at a slower pace to get things right. Emmaline mentioned costumes and this would be a good time to add them to the mix to see what you need to do and have done for each scene since we’ll have the time to do that. What are you wearing for each part of the show? Why not figure that out when we have the time to do so. We’ll also stop things to adjust those blocking issues noted earlier.
Let’s plan on starting at 2:30, but taking that first ½ hour to get mics and (if Emmaline is cool with it, costumes). We will start and stop and may not even get to Act 2, but that’s okay. We want to make things right, not fast.
Okay. Did you find how you needed to respond to this thread to prove that you read it. Do that now. If you have specific requests of things you want to work on, you can say that too. Remember 2:15 is the cut off to save you from the boredom of being read pages of notes for the rest of the show. Also, if Elizabeth posts hers, be sure to read them too! Those are just as important!
Who is first?
