Thank you for helping me to pick up Belle’s house. It looks repairable. If I need help tomorrow, I’ll let you know.
For ALL: We start 2:30 on the dot. If you didn’t let either me or Ashlyn know, you’re doing it wrong. We had some of you starting without mics today because of that.
No enchantress. That messed up light crew.
“Belle”
-Cast member getting on stage late. As soon as we switch to the village, you need to be ready to be in your place if you are supposed to be on stage.
-Some of you could not be heard during your solos. I’m not sure some of them were sung.
-Remember you need to project into these mics.
-Silly girls were “off” on their entrance.
-Maybe we should have run this one yesterday...
After:
Gaston: “Paid attention to more important things.” It even says in your script to strike a pose. No pose?
Gaston- You were Rylee on stage physically.
Gaston- slow down line delivery
Belle and Maurice: When Gaston and Lefou are talking about the woods, you too should be miming some conversation. Think of what you can do. Talk about the machine. Greet each other like loving dad and daughter, etc.
Maurice- I like what you’re doing with your voice. Keep it up and be consistant with it.
Maurice- Do not look directly at the pit for Kesler to cue you. We have that tv in the middle of the auditorium for that purpose. The pit does not exist in your world.
Belle: Re: Maurice’s machine. You need to pull out the pieces of log to show it works before you say it works!
We need bigger reactions to the machine. Is it working? Not working? And then more excitement when it works.
You really need to pick up the lines on this. Forgetting lines on page 14 and 15 really threw off everything including Maurice’s song in the forest. The pit can only vamp for so long.
Maurice- You need to say “Drat!” as in the script. That’s the sound cue for the wolves. If you don’t say that...you don’t get wolves. You can’t say the next line without the wolf cue.
Maurice- I’m hoping to work with the light crew, When you face the curtain, as if you were going to knock, that is their cue to blackout the lights. That should give everyone plenty of time for the scene change.
Scene change needs to look organized. It didn’t. The fireplace was never turned on. How can Maurice warm himself by the fire?
The scene with the group and Beast. Try to not hug the back wall so much. It’s a typical thing to “seek the protection of the set” but the lighting in this auditorium is so poor. Our lights do not hit that back area.
Nice job working without the set...
Gaston- You are sooo Rylee today. Whatever happened to all those suggestions Kesler gave you?
Gaston: Will you be carrying a ring box? If so...how will you carry it?
Gaston: You need to look at the audience more while singing. This song is ultimately for the audience’s benefit. They’re the ones that paid to see the show.
Silly Girls: “She turned you down” Be aware of how you are standing. Can you angle yourself more so we can see all of you.
Lefou: You’ve got a great character coming out on stage. Don’t be afraid to go bigger. Play for laughs.
Lumierre: You almost have the lines. Keep working to learn the lines. The more you go over them, the more they will stick in your brain.
Maurice- You need to be in the “dungeon” as Lumierre and Cogsworth exit. If you wait for them..the audience will look in your direction and see you entering the cell.
Belle- page 32 As soon as Maurice is in place, come out. Your first line is moments after the music starts.
The character/stage crew that first grabs Belle and the Maurice should be the same. That person is supposed to stand and wait for more orders from Beast. It would be great if that person could stand still the entire time and then come to “life” when Beast says “Throw her out!”
Beast and Belle: Make sure when you are doing your dialogue before the bedroom that you are not standing on the side where they are sneaking on your bedroom. We want to hide that. Stage crew did a nice job being right on that scene change. Nice job!
Belle- “Home” I know you’re not a huge fan of the song... but you do a great job with it. Look more at the audience when singing it though.
“Gaston” - Cast do not wait for the scene change to complete. You have a limited amount of time from the beginning of the song before the lyrics kick in. As soon as you are seated Gaston and LeFou is by you...go for it.
“Gaston” – The energy was great! Keep it up!
“Gaston” – “Nooooooo Oneeeee” From that point on things fell apart. It was like no one was sure if they should sing...
“Gaston” Has no one had success in finding plastic mugs (or pewter mugs) to replace the fragile ones that you’ve busted up so much? If you have them, bring them in...put your name on them. If they need painted, I can do that!
Maurice entrance--- You’re dialogue about needing help is so quiet. You need to be more urgent and desperate during this entire scene.
We need slow down this whole scene.
Crony 1: Remember to NOT say “Crazy Ol’ Maurice” until the music stops.
Gaston: Why are you staring at the pit? They do not exist in your world. We talked about this...
Gaston: you need to play to the audience more. Be more confident in yourself. You know your lines. You look like you’re second guessing yourself sometimes.
After tavern scene. There is no scene change music. As soon as the tavern pieces are gone and the castle is revealed...start the scene. Let the rest of the change happen behind your lines.
Lumierre/Potts: YOU MUST CONTROL YOUR TEMPER Say it with more emphasis! (watch the cartoon if you need too... That’s what we need for this line)
Nice job remembering to not hug the back castle so much.
Beast- You’re doing a great job delivering your lines.
Mrs Potts- “kid’s laughter” is a bit modern. (page 51)
Page 52- I missed it... Beast did you pull the rose so the petal falls.
Babette- Beast says “Act like a gentleman” twice before you say your line.
Belle- Page 53- Look at the script you smile before you say “I know” Make it obvious.
Stage crew- Nice job removing the bedroom
Page 55: Cosgworth/Lumierre Review lines
So did we decide against the table for “Be Our Guest?”
I’m not liking Lumierre singing to the back wall as the ensemble enters. Can we change that? It looks awkward. He can do the same thing..but backing up without the turn.
Some weak singing by the ensemble in “Be Our Guest” Another case of “should I be singing?”
Babette and Lumiere- page 58- Notice you actually have some dialogue during “Be Our Guest”
Cogsworth- you have dialogue too!
Lumierre- You have dialogue on page 59 “And now for your continued dining pleasure” – You ca drop the napkins part... since we have no napkins.
I want the plates in this number at the end . Even if we just have stage crew wearing them off to the side. They are too awesome to not use.
Page 61
Belle- you can’t forget that line about “If only he weren’t here.” You do it way too often and it’s an important line.
Page 62- Cogsworth look at your lines about the books. You paraphrased and jumbled them and missed some.
This is actually going not too badly. We’ve got bumps, but it’s not a trainwreck...that’s a good thing. We’ll work out these rough spots on Wednesday.
Are we actually going to get a sound person. There’s a lot to do at this board and I don’t think it can all be learned with only 5 rehearsals left. This is a bit of a big job...for 2 people. You’re so lucky I’m capable of running these things. I do need to untether myself so I can work with the light crew. We’ve got some things being lit that should not be lit and other things that should be lit that aren’t being lit.
If I have time tomorrow, I’m adding the fog machines to this show. This is show that requires fog...
Act II
Thinking ahead. We should work the transformation scene out with makeup/costume on Thursday. We can’t keep faking it like the Belle/Gaston slap and the Belle/Beast kiss
Wolf attack needs to be a little longer. We need a stage crew person to grab Belle’s stick.
Belle you need to show that moment where you want to run away and be free or help the Beast who just saved your life.
Lumierre – page 65 lines. I appreciate seeing less and less script on stage.
Stage crew – be careful with the table. You knocked off the spoon. Also, the arrangement was backwards. Belle had the Beast’s soup and spoon and vice versa.
Again. There is time for the soup scene.
Chip. Don’t say “Cheers” until both Belle and Beast are seated. That’s their cue to eat soup.
Page 68 Lumierre lines
Belle- take more time to look at the library! This is more books that you’ve ever seen before! Watch the tv for Kesler’s cue for “New and a bit alarming”
Chip and Mrs Potts Take a look at the dialogue on page 71. You both mixed the lines up. First near the end of the song and then the dialogue.
Beast and Belle- Nice work in the library with dialogue. Let the scene breathe. No rushing is needed.
Is the fireplace broken? Why is it not being turned on anymore?
Beast-“ I told you so.” You can really show how “smart” you are here with this line. Don’t rush it.
This is an unconscious thing that I’ve been noticing. Whenever the pit hits a note that doesn’t sound familiar to one of you...some of you tend to give a weird look in the direction of the pit. Don’t do that.
“Human Again” ending needs some polishing especially when you are in your line.
When you girls sing with confidence, this auditorium sounds beautiful.
Scene change from “Human Again” to “Maison des Lunes” needs help. It wasn’t finished until 2 minutes into the song.
Gaston/Lefou/d’Arque Your job is to bring on your chairs and to start your scene as soon as you are sitting. DO NOT WAIT for anything else. If the scene isn’t changed by the time you start, don’t worry about it. You only have so many measures before the song begins. You’ve got dialogue to fit in there.
Gaston/Lefou/d’Arque You can’t rush the song so much. The pit can’t keep up with you if you go faster than the song.
After “Maison de Lune” Gaston do NOT congratulate yourself on how awesome you are and how well it went.
Scene change from “Maison de Lune” did not go very smoothly. Stage crew. The black curtain wanting to mingle with the white curtain happens is some swings the black curtain open too far during a scene change.
Say, how do I respond to these notes this time? Great question. Give a compliment to another member in the cast. Once a cast member has been complimented, they cannot be complimented again. The earlier you check the notes, the more choices you have for picking who to compliment.
Lumiere/Beast/Cogsworth- Look at the dialogue on page 81. It wasn’t just Collin having line problems. Those of you who have had the script for almost 3 months were having issues too.
Page 83- Lumierre and Cogsworth you both forgot an entrance and your line. W?
Belle- Earlier note that you missed/forgot? When the Beast lets you go you go off stage right.
Page 85 Cogsworth “But why? “ Can’t forget that line...that’s the cue for the pit to play #16 “If I Can’t Love Here – reprise”
Should I ask if the white curtain is broken now?
Cast- A side note- You are doing a great job of turning off and on your mics. Not really any issues today. Keep it up!
I’ll probably change out the batteries on Friday for everyone on their mics. If you were cutting out, let me know below and I’ll change yours tomorrow. We’re trying to get the most out of our batteries because 46 AA batteries (for the entire cast) is a lot of money... Have you seen what batteries go for?
d’Arque: We need a more sinister voice. You’re too nice.
Lefou: page 87 “He was raving...” forgetten line
Mob- You don’t come across as too concerned about this Beast as a group. Some of you do...some of you, not so much. Do you want this Beast making off with your children?
Mob- Was anyone able to find a prop that you could hold? I’ll have torches but not enough for everyone. We need random objects
Gaston: You do know that “Cut down a tree” is not in your script, right? It’s just “Take whatever booty you can find, the Beast is MINE!”
Battle scene- The Babette/d’Arque /Lumierre scene was a wall hugger. Get away from the back wall of the castle.
Lumierre- You forgot that after you burn the butt that you need to head right to the West Wing for the Beast dialogue.
The Battle went so much better yesterday
The ending celebration. I’m not believing you care that you actually won. It’s such a weak celebration. Don’t just walk off! Celebrate off! There should be a blackout, but you may not get it if I can’t get up in the light booth to help the light crew.
Belle- If you don’t yell “NOOOOOO!” the Beast dies. No pressure.
This fight was also better yesterday.
Beast- Nice to see you have an injury from your fight. Limps are good.
We need to make Gaston’s fall more convincing. It’s almost there, you just need to disappear faster.
Fireplace still broken?
Thursday- We do need to work the transformation with makeup and costume. This needs to be timed with lights and fog and everything. It needs to look amazing and not cheap and sad.
Stage crew- You remembered the rose! Yes!
Was that a kiss between Beast and Belle? Sort of?
We need to work out the timing of the end scenes. They go with the music. They were a bit off with Amanda gone.
I can’t believe you all forgot how the finale goes.
This ending was so flat... This is a cast that was just released from 10 years of a sucky life. Show your happiness.
A little better the second time.
Lina- I need to know the story behind your broken mic. Mics don't normally break like that.
Cleanup in MC-8. You're mostly doing a great job, but if you see things left on tables, please take them or put them back where you got them from. If you eat messy food on the tables, it's your job to clean them off. Don't leave crumbs and spilled soda for my 1st class in the morning.
Mic tape- Doing a great job disposing of it...mostly. I didn't see any yet today but yesterday I found some on a table in MC-8 and...on the piano.
Hoping the pit can stay with you Friday night. We tried bribing. Work on continuing to bribe them.
Okay, those are the notes.
Respond as required.
Deadline is 2:30 on Wednesday. Any later and you get notes read to you.
Tomorrow we are adding costumes and concentrating exclusively on Act One. We need to work out EVERY single bug in the show in Act One and even though we have “run the entire show” in the schedule, I think this will benefit us more.
Today wasn’t not such a bad day. You should be proud of yourself when you compare last Monday/Tuesday to today. In one week, we’ll be doing our final rehearsal before we have an audience. If we improved that much in a week, think of what we can do in another week!
Get rest, good luck to whomever is testing tomorrow!
