Drowsy Note 3/28
These are pretty much for everyone one of you, so please respond that you read them.
One of the things that really sticks out, now that you have microphones…is that some of you have horrible enunciation issues. There were some lines that sounded like I was stuck in a foreign film, desperately trying to translate what was being said. There is no reason to rush your lines. Take care saying them. The enunciation problems happen when you start talking too fast. Find those periods in your speech and use them to take a breath before you say the next sentence.
The other thing that stuck out was the crazy amount of missed lines and paraphrases that happened this afternoon. We should be beyond that. Your homework for spring break is to go over all of your lines, one by one. Have someone work with you to help you catch where you’re making up things that aren’t in the script or that you’re forgetting. I want that first rehearsal back from break to be perfect as far as lines and lyrics go. This is a Tony Award winning script, and we need to follow it word-by-word as written. We can actually get into trouble if a MTI representative comes to our show and notes this. We’ve had them come before, and we’ve never got into trouble. I don’t want this to be the first show where we get into trouble for this, especially since it’s been in every set of notes since the beginning. I can’t help you on this one, you are one your own. I won’t be happy if this is an issue 12 days from now. That’s plenty of time to fix this issue on your end. Agreed?
Thank you for not breaking the microphones today. That’s a good start. You’ll get used to working with them over the next few weeks of rehearsal. We do have a couple of microphones on order for the ensemble, so if you do find that what you have isn’t great, there is hope for you. Kaitlyn you should have a mic that actually matches everyone else.
We’ll have our sound people start the day after spring break and they’ll be learning the sound board. It’s probably going to be most difficult for them when everyone is singing because it’s very tricky to balance all 16 of you at once. You’ll get feedback and other fun stuff, so bear with them as they learn.
It was nice getting away from the rehearScore, and it wasn’t a total trainwreck today. When we get back from break, we’ll have a few days each week where the pit will be working with us in the auditorium. Using the pit recording now will make that an easier transition for us. As a bonus, you’ll have Mr. Kesler there to point at you when to come in on time. Right now you don’t have that, but you mostly seemed to know your songs well enough to know.
For Thursday, our final rehearsal before break, we’re meeting in MC-8 at 2:30 to warm up and then Victoria is going to work with you for an hour while I record Act 2 with the pit. If all goes well, I can use that for tomorrow’s rehearsal. We’ll give you a short break to get water and your microphones and then we’ll run Act 2 probably twice. Please plan to stay the entire time, and please be on time. Remember to contact me or Ashlyn if you think you’ll be late.
When we’re back from spring break, we’ll be in hyperdrive. We’ll have exactly 2 weeks and 2 days to perfect the show. Again, a HUGE part of that will be you having your lines 100% down. We’ll have the entire set finished, the pit built, and all props and set pieces finished and ready for you. The main focus that first week back will be to perfect both Act one and Act two so we can combine them the following week. The pit will be with us on Monday and Tuesday of that week, so you’ll get a chance to work with them live.
If you have questions or comments for anyone, please share them here. Otherwise, let me know that you read this. I’m giving you until 7:30 am Thursday to respond. As I’ve been saying, these notes really are going to be worthless if you don’t read them until the next rehearsal. If you don’t respond, you’ll be on the list to bring water. It’s a long list already, but you are going to be soooooooo thirsty…..
See you tomorrow. 2:30 p.m. around the piano. Not late.
