4-22 Notes
Just a note on warmups. It’s at 6:15 tomorrow too and it’s not optional. I noticed when I was going in and out during warmups that some cast members were not participating. It is for your benefit. You also look like a Diva if you don't do them.
Lights- Do not light the Prince until the narrator starts to talk about him. Morgan was shaking his head “no” for a reason.
Lights- I think this is the 3rd out of 4 rehearsals where we didn’t have 3 people in the light booth as required.
Spencer needs to make sure the mics are not muted before people start talking and singing.
Sound- Gun shot was late.
I’m not sure if the pit was too loud or if the mics were too low, but I heard none of Lefou and Gaston’s dialogue when they first appeared.
“Belle” is a great number and you are doing so well with it. So much improvement each time you do it!
Gaston- Assume the audience will want to clap after “Belle” ends. Don’t say your line right after the last note. Hold the pose, wait for the applause to die down and then say your line. If you try to talk over laughter or applause, you’re subconsciously training the audience to not clap or laugh. That’s something we don’t want.
Gaston- When Lefou says “What’s a genius?” Aren’t you supposed to “thunk” Lefou? You aren’t.
Maurice. Can you park your machine centerstage? You both were singing almost in front of the pit. Definitely too far stage right. We want to do the show for the audience...not the pit, but I’m sure they enjoyed it. Also, try to keep it parallel to the audience. We don’t want them to see your secrets.
“No Matter What” Nicely sung. Very enjoyable....just go more center.
Sound board. No trees in the forest? You didn’t turn them on.
Lights- We need to go dimmer on the wolf attack. It’s still too light. We need to shut the lights off After the wolves leave. Other wise Maurice has to say “Let me in!” to the trees. It looks odd.
Mrs Potts: “Coming through” entrance... just a little tiny bit late. It needs to cut off Cogsworth’s line.
We need to do diction exercises. A few mushy lines tonight.
Beast entrance. This is another scene that’s been pushed into the back corner stage right. If the back wall is within 5 feet or less behind you...you’re too close to it.
Silly girls. Can you enter your scene crying a little more quietly? We heard all 3 of you running on. Just walk.
Ashlyn and Ashlyn’s mom- Very nice job with Gaston’s costume enhancements. Seriously. Well done.
“ME” nice job Gaston and Belle! Way to have fun with it.
Silly Girls- All 3 of you are great! Keep it up! I love the “competition” you’ve got going for Gaston.
Lefou- After finally thinking “hardest” react more in pain. That genuinely hurt. Think an ice cream headache or one of those headaches you get when you drink a Slurpee too fast. Don’t rush the pain. It’s a funny moment that you’re throwing away.
Note to me- Change the batteries in Lumierre’s candles.
The dungeon scene works well with the lighting done correctly. I think this is first time it was what I was imagining for this scene.
The dungeon scene and the following scene is well acted. Nice work Belle and Beast.
The door now has “brakes” on the wheels. I’m hoping that solves our moving door problem. If the door doesn’t roll...probably a brake is on. Beast’s door slam shows that maybe that did solve the problem!
“Home” Nicely sung Belle. You really show your emotions in this one.
Mrs Potts- cheat out while singing your “Home” reprise. Beautifly sung.
Scene change to “Gaston” was a bit slow. No one seemed to be moving with much urgency. Kudos to the pit for filling in the gap with music.
“Gaston” nice job everyone! Seriously, if you’re having a good time, that rubs off on the audience. The “clanking” mugs bit has so improved over the past few weeks. Those of you who used to watch the others to see if you were doing it right are not longer looking at the others to see if you are doing it right. You’ve got confidence in yourself.
Lights : After “Gaston” reprise. The lights need to go off as soon as Gaston and Lefou exit. With a scene change that has no music, they need every second for that scene change.
What do we need to do to fix or repair Cogsworth’s “winding handle”?
Top of page 47 dialogue was wonky. I’m not sure if Mrs Potts said “We’re all in this together” enough extra times.
Door brakes in second bedroom scene still seem to be holding up to a door slam and the Beast bursting through it.
Dialogue after Beast storms out of Belle’s room was so quiet until Mrs Potts spoke.
Lights- We need to see Belle and Wardrobe when the Beast wants to see them. I had to light the scene with my flashlight.
Lights- Make sure the color of the spot is set before turning it on...unless it’s like the scene where you follow Belle into the West Wing and the color changes.
Lights- You turned off the Beast’s light before he said “Act like a gentleman.”
Beast- “Act like a gentleman. (then) Act like a gentle...man. Notice in your script how the words are together the first time you say it and then separate the 2nd time you say it. You’re making the distinction.
Lumierre- Don’t look at the pit at the beginning of “Be Our Guest” Look at the tv. I know it’s tempting... but don’t do it.
Ensemble line stage left was not really in a line at all. You were staggered which looked odd because stage right was so nicely lined up.
Ensemble- Your voices should be booming when you’re all singing together. I could barely hear you . You know the song. I know the song. Show your confidence up there! Don’t hold back! You got better as the song went on...but be at that level at the beginning!
This is my daily note for Lumierre and Babette to say their lines on page 58. I did hear Cogsworth, but barely. I think Spencer may have had your mic muted.
Nice strong finish to “Be Our Guest” If that doesn’t get wild applause at the end, then our audience is a sad audience.
Beast- The 2nd time you say “Act like a gentleman” twice (at Belle’s “door”) . The words are together again, not separated as you are saying them.
The pacing of this show is overall pretty good. You’ve cut 90 minutes off of Act One in the past 2 weeks. It’s actually ending at the time it’s supposed to end.
Nice powerful ending Beast. Careful of the mirror... sounded like you hit it.
Intermission- This is for the entire cast. During an actual performance, you cannot go out onto stage or into the audience. We need to remind our wolves about that because they had to be ejected at the last second so we could start. You have to stay backstage, in Mc-8 or the costume room.
Act 2
Wolves- nice job beating up on Beast...
The scene was well timed this time. Keep it up.
Lights- We can turn off the light just as Belle helps Beast up. We don’t need to follow them off stage. Every extra second we can give to the scene change..the better.
Nice job being ready by the time the music ended.
Beast- You lost your wine goblet again.
We rushed Belled off slightly early from her soup. We didn’t really get that moment.
Lights- On in the library during “Something There” when they weren’t supposed to be.
“Human Again” I couldn’t understand Lumierre’s lyrics near the beginning.
“Human Again” just a minor thing. Ensemble was shuffling the spots where they were before the lights went down on them and onto Beast and Belle
“Human Again” Don’t stop smiling! I’m seeing some frowny type faces and those stick out pretty badly considering what you are singing.
Note to me. They broke the deer head again. Fix the deer head.
Nice job with scene change from tavern to castle. That was smooth and fast!
Mrs Potts- Part of the (Before Beauty) music is for you to take your place on stage for the song.
Beast and Belle, you’ve been working on that dance and it shows. Nicely done.
Belle and the mirror. I can see you were concerned, but your dialogue was totally lost. I’m not sure if it was you or the pit being to loud at that point.
Lights- Beast in West Wing for the reprise. Turn off the castle lights faster. The scene is more emotional if it’s just the Beast alone.
Nice scene change to Belle’s house again. Belle and Maurice can enter as soon as the lights come up.
“There’s Been a Change in Me” - Belle, you’ve dropped a line in your dialogue before you start the song. Check it out. That may be why you were off at the beginning of the song.
After “Change” but before “Mob” Lefou- your torch wasn’t lit. Don’t bring out a torch if you can’t light it. It looks silly.
Lights- You can stop the disco ball once Belle puts the mirror down.
“Mob Song” The first village words were quiet. Not sure if it was a mic issue, Spencer issue or what, but be sure to project! I heard some of you...but not others.
We need a candle for Gaston’s lantern. Gaston- You can steal one off of the Beast’s table...just make sure it’s put back at the end of the night.
Battle- Chip/Silly Girl chase is going on too long. It’s cutting into the Babette, D’Arque, Lumierre time.
LeFou- You had a late entrance during the Battle. Mrs. Potts and Chip were there, but you weren’t.
Chip- Don’t hold up the spray bottle. You can keep it hidden in your costume nice and low and just shoot it up into LeFou’s face. We don’t want to see the spray bottle.
We need to work on the transformation. Maybe Belle can stay in front and hide what’s going on behind her? It was pretty obvious what was happening since 2 people rushed out before the lights went out. Can we work this at 4:30 tomorrow when you come in. We need that fog. We can totally get away with anything if there’s enough fog. I want the fog to linger as the new “humans” come on stage. I did this with my original production and it looked so good. If you think there’s too much fog...you’re wrong. I’ll figure out what’s wrong with the one stage right when I have time tomorrow.
Lumierre, Cogsworth and Mrs Potts were almost 1 minute late after the Beast became a prince. Please look at the info that I put online regarding the timing of the presentation. Fortunately you rushed your lines as usual, so you somehow caught up to the music or they caught up to you. Please read the “transformation” thread to look
WTH happened to the end of our show? The finale...oy. We are too close to opening night to have this happen on stage.
Don’t forget we do bows now. Did we all forget? It seemed like you forgot.
After bows. Um.. do not come out. Go away. You’re done. Go great your audience outside! Just don’t come back out!
That’s it for now. I’ll add if I wake up in the middle of the night with anything.
Oh...one thing. Water bottles. I’m still finding new ones on the floor backstage. Not cool. Keep your drinks in MC-8 if you can’t find a “safe” place to keep your water and then dispose of it at the end of the show.
You’ve all stepped up over the past week and it’s showing onstage. I’m seriously excited for you to have an audience now! They are definitely going to get their money’s worth on this show, especially if you end it better than you did tonight!

Tomorrow is the same plan as today. I’ll be here around 4:30ish. You will arrive by 5 and SIGN IN first thing.
At 6:15 we’ll do warm ups and the show will start at 6:30 on the dot! If all goes well, we’ll get you out of here at the same time tomorrow night (9:30ish)
Last person to respond has to entertain us before warmups start tomorrow night. We’ll let you know how you’ll be doing that.
