For those of you who left early on Wednesday, we’ve been offered the opportunity to take part in Disney’s 25th Broadway Anniversary celebration of “Beauty and the Beast.” Way before you were born...in 1991, Disney released the animated “Beauty and the Beast” to great acclaim. It was the first animated movie ever to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
A few years later, Disney started looking into getting into creating Broadway shows, and since this was their biggest movie at the time, they chose “Beauty and the Beast” as their first attempt at a Broadway musical. It opened on April 18th, 1994 and was a huge success and started a run of successful musicals that have run on Broadway for the past 25 years including “The Lion King” (which opened in 1997 and is still running today), “The Little Mermaid”, “Tarzan”, “Mary Poppins”, “Newsies” and more.
To celebrate this 25th Anniversary milestone, Disney and MTI (Music Theatre International) reached out to anyone that would be performing “Beauty and the Beast” during the upcoming anniversary week. We open on April 25th, but we made the cut by having our senior matinee on the 24th.
They asked us to send photos of our production (a cast photo and some staged shots) to send to MTI and Disney. They also want to keep our pictures in their archives for possible future usage. Starting on April 18th, they’ll post pictures of our production (and I’m assuming whatever other groups are doing this show) on social media including Facebook, Twitter and whatever else they use. Obviously these will be seen nationwide...and worldwide...because that’s how the Internet works.
So starting April 18th, look for the hashtag #BeautyandBeast25 to see if we pop up somewhere over the week.
Since they need the pictures pronto, we are going to take time after we run through Act 2 today to take pictures in costumes. Again, please be patient since there are a ton of costumes...and one Ashlyn.
If you don’t want to be digitally erased or removed from a picture I must have a photo release form signed and returned by Monday. If you are 18 or over, you can fill out the “adult” form and just leave it on my desk, and if you are under 18, you’ll need to take the “Broadway Jr” form, take it home and return it before Monday.
We’ll probably also use the photos ourselves to promote the show as well or at least for a lobby display.
This is a pretty cool opportunity. I knew that Disney would probably want to acknowledge the 25th anniversary somehow because it was such a big deal to the company. I’m excited you all can be a part of it!
