Notes 11-8-18
These are the last notes that I’m planning on taking for this show, so I’m expecting Monday to be absolutely perfect! Monday I just want to sit and watch you create magic.
On Monday the plan was to have CALL at 5:30 pm, but I want us to meet at 5, so we can do bows. That is the latest you should arrive at MP otherwise you won't have a clue how the bows work. You'll have plenty of time to put on make up, costumes and get mics. At 6:45 we’ll meet around the piano and have any short comments from me or others and then a warm up. The show will start at 7:00 pm as it will on opening night.
When the music starts, we’ll have our resident Dobby make an announcement about cell phones. The music will play out as always and then lead into “Hamilton”McGonagall: Better pacing of you voice. I’m not sure if you mic was not on or up all the way, but be sure you project.
Sound: (For Ivanna) You can’t turn up the mic when the characters first start talking. It needs to be up before they talk. There was a lot of quiet words before they got louder.
Sorting Hat: Better energy. Not sure why the sound crew stopped your song ½ way though, but you did a really nice job. Your practicing has paid off!
Sound: (For Ivanna) Make sure all of the music is turned up louder.
Students: You’ll need to practice getting those ties on much faster. The lights actually came up when they were supposed to. If you need help, just ask! And practice!
Same with the robes. ..but those can be put on in the light if needed. Remember the scenes are supposed to go fast, and everything should be fast paced from scene to scene.
Draco and Harry in year 4- You are standing practically right in front of the screen. Can you step forward a few steps into the light?
For everyone, if you are within 3 feet of the screen, you’ll be in the dark. Don’t hug the screen. Get closer to the audience. Same on the other side with the castle. Stay 3 feet in front of that too. Hugging the back of the set is such an amateur actor trait. Be closer downstage and you’ll be more like the professional actors on Broadway, except for the $2000 a week paycheck.
Slides: The everything is awesome Dobby slide can stay on through the song. It cuts off too soon.
Hey-Nice job down there! I’m on page 34 and I haven’t taken as many notes. I think you’ve stepped it up!
Hermione, after you are “eaten” by the book case, we could see you walking off behind the castle. Stay out of the light.
I did mention it early on in rehearsals, but again it is okay if stage crew physically comes out and grabs you. We need to make it clear that the bookcase is eating you.
Draco you were a little late coming on and saying your line after Scorpius fainted (p 47)
Ron- You got a little stuck on the line at the bottom of page 50, but it did come to you.nape:
Hermione you are still holding onto your wand with both hands like someone is going to steal it.
Page 61- Albus awkward moment was your fault. You messed up the top line and then we ended up jumping down ½ to Scorpius saying “Let’s humiliate Cedric”
Albus- Page 63 you know where you went wrong, because you did it write when you started over.
Everyone in the cast: Secret question to answer time...I want you to give a compliment to someone else in the show as your response to this. Like with the Harry Potter characters, you cannot repeat someone's name, so if someone beats you to a person...you've got to pick another cast member. Keep these to cast members only, because they'll be the main readers of these.
Snape , Scorpius and Cedric scene—Scorpius and Snape try to cheat out more. You both were in profile and it’s going to make it hard for those on the sides to see you.
Time Warp is getting better. Not sure why they stopped it so late.
Dementor scenes need FOG- I even added a 3rd fog machine. They’ re not as ominous without the fog.
Page 76- The music should be longer and Cedric and everyone should be out there for the scene where Scorpius throws himself in front of Delphi’s spell.
Albus we’ll need better placement of the script while you’re tied up. That was so nice of Delphi to help you out though.
Cedric-you will need to do something to distinguish yourself from Harry. You can’ t wear the grey sweater as Cedric.
Cedric-you technically killed Delphi. Try not to Avada Kedavra her next time.
Music Year 2000 should be cued up correctly before you play it.
Hermione: page 101 “We’ll be right over, we know everything” is what you said. Your actual line is “They just filed us in, we’ll be right there!”
Okay….did something break during the make over scene? Ah, a time turner. We are down 2 out of 3 time turners now. If the 3rd one breaks we are without time turners. At 15 bucks a pop, I'm not buying another one for this show.
As before, the last section of the show seems to be where everything clicks best. Keep up the great work here!
As mentioned afterwards, we have the show down to an hour and 39 minutes. We did have some starts and restarts today, so we are getting pretty close to that magic number. If it's a little over 90, that's okay. The 2 hour plus shows were killing me though. So great job on improvement!
The bucket of constructive notes were great! You had some great comments in there.
Please keep in mind the thoughts of those who watched you today. They had some good real comments for you which I appreciated. It helps to have fresh eyes watch the show.
That's about it....I noticed a couple of things though after everyone left which could be important:
-MC-8 Please clean up after yourselves. This will be even more important once you break out the make up on Monday. I'm sitting here noticing water bottles and my tissues on the tables, and various things that were moved. Treat this room like a campground. Leave it as you found it.
-The Light Booth- Maybe someone can mention that the light booth forgot to turn off the stage lights before they left. That's a great way to cause M-P to go up in flames when things start overheating near the auditorium ceiling.
-There is a microphone on the piano. It's a back up mic, but all mics should be put back on the seats in the auditorium. We want to keep track of them.
-Mic tape. I'm still seeing it stuck to things like my rug in my room. Take the second that it takes to throw it away. I also pulled another piece off of the piano, even after I asked you not to do that. The tape literally takes the paint with it when I take it off. I know the piano looks crappy, but don't add to it's crappiness.
See you Monday at 5! Be sure to sign in first thing! 9 people failed to do that today by 2:30. As mentioned above, we'll do bows first, then give you time to get make up, costumes and mics on. We can also use that time to go over any trouble spots you'd like to fix. At 6:45, we'll meet around the piano for some last minute notes, thoughts and prayers and then give you time to warm up.
Show starts right at 7 with the goal to finish it be 8:30ish. If that's accomplished, we'll have a last minute talk about Tuesday and let you take off mics, costumes and makeup. We haven't 100% decided on a Tuesday afternoon rehearsal, but that depends on how Monday goes. I personally don't want to run the show before Opening night because you already have 6 shows next week plus the 1 rehearsal on Monday. We don't want to kill you off yet. We may want you to audition for the musical. But if we need too, we'll do it.
That's enough from me. Signing off from note taking, the show is in your hands now. I have a lot of faith in you based on your improvement this week. Just don't put the show out of your head until Monday, otherwise we'll be back to how things were on Tuesday. No one wants that.
Let me know if you read this! I'm giving you until the end of school tomorrow. Even though this is the last of the show notes, please keep reading the boards. We're not officially done yet!
