April 23/24 Stuff and Things
We have a slight emergency that I’m hoping someone can help with.
If the lights were “off” or not on when they were supposed to be, it’s because we had only one person with experience in the light booth. Out of our last 5 run throughs, our light booth has been understaffed by either people not showing up...or apparently getting a job and quitting without telling us. We need 3 people in the light booth, 2 for each spot light and one to run the light board.
We do offer volunteer hours if needed. We can never have to many people helping up there. I originally wrote the light cues with 4 people in mind (3 spots and one 1 light board)
I didn’t actually take notes for April 23rd unless something really went wrong...and some things really went wrong. I’ve put the notes at the end of this for you. There were some theatre sins committed tonight and I wasn’t too happy with them.
I think we’re truly ready for our next step and that’s our shows with actual audiences. Tonight was unique because you will never do this show without an audience ever again. Scary? Exciting? Both?
I think you’re ready.
Remember tomorrow is the senior citizen’s matinee. There’s already a thread with details. If you haven’t read it, you should or you’re going to be super confused about what’s going on.
M-P students, you have been officially excused 6th period. Mrs Olson has guaranteed that no one will call your homes because you skipped. M-G, 10th Street and others, you never told me if you needed any help leaving early, so hopefully you can get to M-P as close to 2:00 as possible.
The show on Wednesday starts at 3:00 pm on the dot! We will only wait if we have late arrivals coming in... because we always do.
Here’s some notes. The prologue was a mess. I should be pretty simple, but the lighting mess ups and missing characters and lack of fog that I ask for every night really make this scene a rocky start to the show. I’d love to work it out again with everyone involved before our 1st audience tomorrow.
Maurice- You win one of the few notes tonight- Your trip to the woods was weird because you need to sing your song on stage. You looked stuck behind moving set pieces. Don’t get stuck behind set pieces, you have the priority on stage. Part of the problem may have been lights. They didn’t turn on the lights until you were ½ way through your song. I lit you with a flashlight.
Maurice- You win note two! After the wolf attack, and the lights go out, that’s when I want to hear the words “Let Me In! Let Me In!” I didn’t hear that at all.
Beast make up- Better than last night...but we need to go even lighter. I’m still seeing mostly eyes and teeth. Your facial features are completely lost and it’s just not working on stage. Because this has to be taken off quickly, you also have another issue with that shade of brown.
Oh yeah, and it looks racist, but that just goes with the territory.
“Gaston” looked great. I’m wondering why some are not using cups. Also, we need to solve the cotton problem. The stage was littered with cotton after the song. It looks awful in the castle and the rest of the show.
“Gaston” reprise was sad. You may have been laughing on stage, but I wasn’t. Don’t you ever do that during an actual show. I will come back, throw a chair and you’ll see my dark side like you’ve never seen it before. Understand?
After “Gaston” - The castle scene needs to start immediately. Don’t wait for the lights. Say your lines. I saw one set of characters ready to go, but were we waiting on the other side?
Beast- You CAN’T miss an entrance. Characters onstage that are waiting for Beast to arrive... You’ve got to improvise and stay in character. You can’t make it obvious to the audience that someone has missed their entrance. Beast, you can avoid putting them in that situation by not missing your entrance again. I think you’ve missed this one before.
What’s going on tonight? Now Beast has forgotten his lyrics?
This show is really rough tonight. I’m hoping you’re not tired. You have 4 more times to do this.
Note to myself- I need to get the rope light off the floor backstage. It can be seen in the audience.
Act 2
Could the wolves wear long sleeves? If not it’s not a huge deal.
Late entrance by a character but it was explained to me. We need do need all of the characters after the wolf scene on stage at the same time for future reference.
Beast make up in Act 2 was better. The lighter look really brings out the facial features.
Mics did seem quieter tonight. I don’t think that was your imagination. I could hear some of you really well, and some of you seemed to be just above a whisper. We’ll need to crank them up for Wednesday’s show. Hearing aids are only so effective.
Tavern scene- 3 things Gaston. 1) Remember to watch the tv for your cue. 2) Don’t forget your cup and 3) When you raise your glass...use your other hand (your upstage left hand) Then you won’t block your face when you raise your “glass”
After “Beauty” I don’t think Belle’s mic was on. If it was, you couldn’t be heard well from the 2nd row.
Transformation- I talked to Beast. We'll get this. The key is still LOTS OF FOG and distracting the audience.
“The Finale” - oof. Even after working it, I’m not sure that it’s there. I’m going to lay this all on Babette to help keep us on track. No pressure Babette. Beast, you need to not rush the greeting of your changed friends. Slow it down. Look at everyone. Hugs! Whatever. You kind of been brushing off Mrs Potts. Take time with all three.
Babette- You have a definite music cue to come in on. It’s the Frenchified “Human Again” with accordian mix. Listen to the pit. As soon as that music changes, you “Yoo Hoo!” If Cogworth, Lumierre and Mrs. Potts need to be awkwardly on stage longer...then they need to improv something. If you come on before “Human Again” the rest of the mini-scenes will finish way before the ensemble comes out. You and Lumierre were perfect when we did it the 2nd time. Keep up that “flirtation” going. The 3rd time, you came out too early and it didn’t go so well. So no pressure, Babette. No pressure.
That’s my notes. It would be great if you could acknowledge that you read them. Since some of them are important and affect the show’s success it would be nice if you could give me a “hey, I read these” before the senior matinee.
Get that rest...see you NO LATER than 1:30 tomorrow. 2:00 at the latest if you come from MG or elsewhere! We've got an audience to entertain!
