This is a placeholder for the notes that I'm going to post minutes after rehearsal ends tonight.
You will have from about 5:30ish pm to 2:30 pm the next day (Wednesday) to read and respond to the notes. If you fail to respond, you will be responsible for the torture known as me reading the notes to you after tomorrow's rehearsal.
Yesterday was a day of highlights and lowlights and our goal this week is to get out of the lowlights. I always have this fear after spring break that some cast members would set the musical aside and not think about it at all over the 9 days off...and it was pretty obvious yesterday who you were. I know not everyone was in town during spring break, but I was seriously surprised that not one person showed up on the day that I said I would be here over break. I offered you space to work on things, but no one took advantage of it. I spent at least 6-8 hours over 5 days of break here working on things to make this show wonderful. I believe this can be a great show, but man....you need dedication like me, Ashlyn, Victoria and the others who have gone above and beyond. If you've been "phoning" it in, get off the phone and show us how good you can be. We cast you in this show because we thought you could bring something to the show.
I seriously felt bad yesterday for our choreographers who watched you stumble through "Gaston" and "Be Our Guest." I felt bad for Victoria, who could hardly hear some of you singing on stage. I felt bad for Ashlyn who showed great restraint from showing how she really felt. I may have hurt my head from banging it against the soundboard.
We have 10 rehearsals (only 10 rehearsals) to make this show amazing and I do believe it can be done, but it's going to take effort from everyone. Now is the time to start living and breathing this show every day (even weekends.) I know there's a great show in here somewhere. We just need to find it. We are 2 weeks and 1 day from an actual audience. They expect a quality musical because in the 15 years that I've been at MP, that's all they expect. I want the audience to think to themselves, "We only paid 12 dollars to see this? I would've paid 50! That was great!"
Turning off semi-inspirational speech.
Check this thread after 5:30 tonight and respond. You will not be a popular person if you fail. I'd rather use our extra time to fine tune some problem areas. I'm sure many of us would too!

4-9 Show notes
Sorry for any spelling or grammar errors. I don't proofread these. These are just "on the fly" notes. Read and respond as required. 2:30 pm deadline tomorrow.
Mics will be available to everyone tomorrow. They will have your names on them, so please look for your names. Mics are located on the chairs behind the sound board. Some have different types of mics and so whatever you get, please don’t complain about them. Mic packs cost anywhere from $150-$600 to replace and mics themselves run from $50-$200. That’s why we emphasize treating them well. If you break it...there are no replacements.
Prologue: That narrator was great! Opening: Belle
Scene change needs to happen BEFORE the cast enters. -Opening wasn’t too shabbly. Bookseller, you can remove a book or two from your shelves so Belle can grab a new one and return
-Gaston NEVER throw your gun on the cement stage! That could’ve easily shattered into pieces because its plastic!
-Anyone with a mic- You need to pull it through your clothing. Most of our expensive accidents happened because things were hanging loosely from clothes. It’ll get caught on stupid things.
-Belle as a number looked pretty good. It’s a good opening for the show.
-Cast- Ensemble- You need to make sure your props go back on the cart after “Belle” – Stage crew has zero time to help you put things back. There’s more of you than them.
-We’re way past missing lines. Belle/Gaston/Lefou You need to look at page 11.
-Maurice- How old are you? You seriously look like a teenager. I’m probably Maurice’s age and I don’t walk that way... Also, Why didn’t you have a mic?
-Belle- “page 15-“ Top- You forgot- “I made you a scarf for good luck.” This entire show has underscoring that depends on your saying those lines on time. Since you hesitated so much and Joe was confused..., Joe’s entrance to the forest was messed up badly.
Maurice- See the script where it says you are nervous heading into the woods...you’re not really.
Page 16- First time, we missed Cogsworth and Lumierre lines. You have lines after Maurice says “hello” twice.
Kesler has notes in his notes that we don’t have. If it’s the first time you’re hearing something...it’s because your script didn’t have it. That’s why we do these rehearsals with the pit.
All- There are scenes where we are supposed to be by the back area of the castle and many where we are not. Try to make it a habit of being up to 5 feet away from the walls. It’s an amateur habit because you seek protection from the walls. You may not be conscious of it...but that’s what you tend to do.
Page 20- Cogsworth- “Listen! Listen to me!” forgotten line.
Maurice- I’m not seeing fear with the Beast. You actually look like you are smiling like it’s funny. If you need to learn about fear, I can have Ashlyn show you fear.
This is for Gaston, but it’s also for others who have songs. Gaston you need to do something else while waiting for your cue to start singing. You’re doing this weird dance that is so not Gaston.
Gaston-Your mic wasn’t on during “me”
Gaston – You need to cheat out more. We should rarely see your profile. It feels weird at times, but it looks better for the audience.
Gaston- I’m not yet believing you’re a big guy who has muscles galore. Your biggest problem is your walk. You totally lose character, especially as you walk off stage. You walk like this guy Rylee that I know.
For everyone. For your convience (so you don’t stare at the pit) there is a tv on the sound board. You can see Kesler conducting and cueing you from there.
Be aware of where we are in the show at all times. Missed entrances are never acceptable. We’re still rehearsing, so this is the time to learn that.
Page 28- Lumierre “Ah, Cogsworth, can you blame...” missed line.
Page 29-Lumierre “All I know is...” missed line.
Belle- page 29- Know your entrance. Your cue is Cogsworth’s “ We’ve got to hold on.”
Chip—Doing great! Look at the audience more. Your “mom” can teach you to cheat out.
Light crew missed some cues- I’ll help them at some point. Having the audience lights up makes it difficult.
Morgan- You need to be more “beastly” and less “manly” You should not walk like a person. You’re a beast! Check out some videos of how other have portrayed the beast. (Also need to cheat out)
The dungeon scene is also underscored. You can’t mess up any lines or hesitate or you’ll be off with the music.
The object (stage crew that grabs Maurice should never leave stage)
Beast- I thought you didn’t need a mic. I can barely hear you...
Beast- Put your foot out to brace the door when you slam it. It hilariously did not shut.
Belle “Home” well done!
Mrs Potts- “Home-tag” nice job- You should have a mic though...
Change to “Gaston” - Needs more urgency. You can’t just slowly walk onto stage. We didn’t even have the cups out, so what’s going to happen when we add those?
(side note: Nicole mentioned doing this and it’s not really a bad idea...if you want a more solid cup, feel free to bring a pair for yourselves. The cups do not have to match. I have silver paint if you want to make it look pewter-like. Someone must know someone who wants to throw out their old plastic mugs...)
“Gaston” There are still some parts where you just look at each other like you are lost. You should know the moves well enough so you are not looking at each other for help, or even worse watching others on stage. Never lose your characters. If you do get lost, the first clue to the audience is you losing your character... if you don’t lose your character you can get away with messing up a little.
“Gaston” was better than yesterday, but you’ve still got a ways to go.
“Gaston” ending is weak.
Side note: When Kesler, I or Ashlyn talks...please don’t talk.
Maurice entrance after “Gaston” why was everyone looking at the pit? Just do the scene. Again with the underscore music, if you hesistate...you throw the music off.
Maurice/JOE- You had your daughter taken by a beast and...you don’t seem to have much urgency in telling anyone.
“Gaston- Reprise” nice job. Not perfect, but you’re selling it with your characters.
“Gaston’ scene change to castle- Ouch. We need to assign jobs for all scene changes. To see one piece come off....and then another one....and then another one... It needs to be choreographed like a dance. This 30 second change took 2 minutes...and when it was done it took almost another minute to start the scene. Secret bonus to really prove you read these and didn’t just pretend to read them. You need to respond with not “I read this!” but with your favorite line in the show. It can be yours or anyone else. I just want that line. Nothing else. No apologies or promises to do better. Cool? Continue reading.
Page 46 Cogsworth “Tell me what?” You started saying something else before you got it right.
Page 47- Lumierre almost a forgotten line...but you got it!
Page 50 Cogworth didn’t say line “Please...attempt to be a gentleman.”
Page 51- Lumierre/Cogsworth- Check out lines
Beast- In the West Wing- Do not touch the railing. It’s just for looks. When you touch it..it moves.
Page 53 Lumierre “Do you think a little thing like that...” forgotten line
Belle—When you leave the bedroom...you can wander around out front of the pit while you are looking around. Don’t wander too close to the characters talking to you.
Page 54 Lumierre... Late entrance.
We need to find time to teach Lumierre the dance/song.
“Be Our Guest” – Ensemble was great on stage right...stage left...not so much. I think one side knows the choreo better than the other.
Just a general note for everyone- You cannot stand on the sides and wait to go on where the audience can see you. I saw that a lot be ensemble today.
We need to get Cogsworth out of the west wing. J/k We do need to get those of you on the sidelines to stay in character though.
Ensemble- Look at the audience while dancing. Don’t look at the pit or each other. We need to get into the habit of looking like you know what your doing. Like in “Gaston” your attitude and confidence sells this.
Nice strong finish. Keep that pose until Cogsworth breaks you up.
Page 60- Cogsworth review your lines. You had some paraphrasing and dropped lines.
Beast page 60. Late entance. Slow down your lines. Wait for Belle... stomp up the stairs on your cue.
Page 61 Belle- You keep forgetting you have a line at the top before you exit.
Page 61 Belle- What’s up there? You had to get hints to say this line.
Page 62... Again the music is timed to your lines. Don’t hesitate to say them. It can throw off the timing if you forget a line.
Nice emotion with Belle and Beast in their final act one scene. I love it!
Beast- You’re touching the rail during your song...bad Beast.
Beast- Stay in character during your song. You don’t have to explain that you’re losing your voice. It’s obvious.
That’s it for notes for now. They weren’t as thorough because I was juggling the soundboard, but I think you should be proud of the improvement today. Keep practicing Act 1 on your own! Please respond that you read these before 2:30 tomorrow. I really don’t want to read them to you. I think we can use your time better.
